In February 1971 I made a definite commitment to rely on Christian Science for healing. Earlier, an appointment had been scheduled with an ear surgeon to arrange a date for surgery on my young daughter's ears. Now I called and canceled the appointment. I had been reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and other Christian Science literature. However, I had not yet attended a Christian Science church.
My daughter and I visited a Christian Science practitioner. After he prayed, read from Science and Health, and talked to me, he recommended that I take the children to a Christian Science Sunday School. He also gave me a Bible verse with words by Christ Jesus to study (Matt. 18:10): "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven." Pondering this Scripture helped me develop more patience while working with my daughter.
I started attending a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and the children were enrolled in the Sunday School. My daughter's teacher was eager to help us heal the ear difficulty. She gave me a passage to consider from Science and Health (p. 63): "In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being." These truths helped destroy the belief that the divorce I had undergone had had a harmful effect on my daughter. In her true nature as a spiritual idea, she had never been separated from the love and care of her Father-Mother God.
