At a time when my husband was afflicted with a serious and painful disease, I was giving him daily shots of morphine to relieve his suffering. Then the doctor declared him to be a morphine addict and refused to write another prescription, in an effort to force my husband into the hospital for treatment. There seemed to be no other solution.

A few years earlier my husband had had an operation on one of his kidneys. Now the other kidney showed signs of the same disease, complicated by tuberculosis of the kidneys and intestines. But my husband refused to be hospitalized.

My parents, who had been studying Christian Science for a little while and who had experienced some wonderful proofs of its healing power, recommended that my husband call a Christian Science practitioner. This man prayed for my husband, and he also asked him to go to a Christian Science Reading Room to borrow a Bible, a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and a current Christian Science Quarterly, so that he could begin to study the Bible Lesson to learn more of Christian Science.
