Mrs. Eddy tells us (Science and Health, p. 421), "When the supposed suffering is gone from mortal mind, there can be no pain; and when the fear is destroyed, the inflammation will subside." This statement meant a great deal to me when I was knocked down by an automobile. My ankle was pinned between the curb and the tire of the car. But as soon as the car was backed up I got up without any assistance and hobbled into my house.

My ankle appeared to be broken, and the foot was discolored. One of my fingers was also severely injured. But as I turned to God to understand more of my untouched spiritual selfhood, intense pain, swelling, and discoloration were overcome completely. One frightening suggestion persisted, however—that I would be crippled.

The following thoughts sustained me with inspired trust and understanding: Nothing is impossible with God; I am not governed by physical law but by the law of God; because I am created in God's image I have dominion over the body and my life. When I thoroughly purified my thinking of fear and knew instead that freedom is man's condition forever, I destroyed the fear of being crippled.
