Eight years ago a sore developed on my face. Gradually it worsened and became unsightly. I prayed very earnestly about this condition and had help from different practitioners at separate times, but the physical evidence did not improve. In fact, it grew worse.

Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 66): "Trials teach mortals not to lean on a material staff,—a broken reed, which pierces the heart. We do not half remember this in the sunshine of joy and prosperity. Sorrow is salutary. Through great tribulation we enter the kingdom." It was a trial for me not to let pride and vanity preoccupy me. I wanted to hide, and I avoided looking people in the face, for fear of what they would say.

Members of my family who are not Christian Scientists insisted that I see a doctor to have the blemish removed. But I am grateful to say that never at any time did I doubt that my healing would come, or yield to the temptation to seek medical aid. Though I grew depressed, comforting messages from the Bible and Science and Health helped to sustain me. I clung to these words of Christ Jesus many times (Matt. 11:28, 29): "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."
