In Christian Science, health and harmony are...
In Christian Science, health and harmony are restored through a scientific understanding of the Christ, as elucidated in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I can relate from experience what this profound fact means to me. From earliest childhood I had suffered from the symptoms of a stubborn case of eczema. Over the years the disease spread with increasing severity to various parts of my body. Each day it became more unbearable. In school, and later in my profession, this condition seemed an insurmountable obstacle. Twenty-five years of medical treatment had failed to bring the slightest improvement. I had been told that in my case the eczema was hereditary, which seemed to make it especially defiant of cure. And so the pattern continued, and I simply put up with it.
Finally, through an acquaintance of my mother's, I learned of Christian Science. It was a landmark occasion! As I read Science and Health, which derives its authority from the Bible, I began to glimpse the reality of God, including divine Mind's absolute control. It was also evident that God, as immortal Life, is not the creator of sickness, and this precludes sickness as a possibility. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy explains (p. 390), "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."
With joy I noticed that after I had begun regular study of the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly, my general state of health took a substantial turn for the better. A chronic thyroid ailment disappeared, and there was no longer susceptibility to frequent colds. When I realized that I could work successfully with the truths of Christian Science and apply them practically, I decided to become a member of The Mother Church and of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.
