Although I was a student of Christian Science, at one point I allowed myself to be overwhelmed by self-pity. I believed that certain friends had become alienated from me through the influence of others. Wrapped up in this erroneous suggestion, I forgot that a mortal, matter-oriented self does not constitute my true being, which is spiritual.
As I became more deeply entrenched in false viewpoints, I began to suffer physically. I had permitted myself to be bound by mortal belief instead of letting God's law unmask and destroy the imposition and thus set me free. Stricken with severe back pains one day, I was taken to the emergency ward of a hospital. The medical diagnosis was pulmonary dropsy caused by cardiac insufficiency. Completely inert, I yielded to medical treatment and extensive examinations and spent a week in the hospital.
However, I felt a responsibility to return the love that had been expressed toward me by giving love and by correctly identifying myself as a perfect daughter of God—exempt from illness.
