Many years ago I was hospitalized with a severe case of shingles. On the fourteenth day I went into a semicoma. My dad sat beside me in utter despair. The doctors had told him I would not live through the night. He was praying from the depths of his heart when he thought of his sister living in a nearby city. He knew she was a Christian Scientist, and he drove to her home for help. Seeing his distress, she returned with him to the hospital.

After dismissing everyone, she stood at the foot of my bed. I was semiconscious. I did not know her, as she had been living overseas, nor did I know anything of Christian Science. But as she spoke of God's allness and the consequent nothingness of evil, suddenly I thought, "I don't have to die!" I sat right up in bed.

My aunt knew that I was healed and requested I be taken home. Minutes before, I had been lying prostrate. Now I sat on the edge of the bed while my aunt and a nurse dressed me. The doctors had told my parents I would not walk again, due to spinal damage resulting from many injections. I was lifted into a wheelchair and rolled down the hall to an elevator. At the first floor my aunt held out her hand and told me to step out of the chair. I obeyed and walked out of the hospital with her, totally free. There were no aftereffects, and the illness has not recurred.
