A friend gave me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and before I had finished reading the first chapter, "Prayer," I was healed of ulcers. I was ecstatic and began to study this book earnestly.

More than anything else, I wanted to be healed of a lifelong problem of colorblindness. I was sure that by the time I had finished reading Science and Health all the way through, the healing would have taken place. How wrong I was! There were many lessons for me to learn first, and the healing did not take place for over a year.

I studied the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly every day. Also, I learned "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468), and I pondered it and worked with it by taking one line at a time and affirming what I was grasping of man's true relationship to God. I used the Concordances to Mrs. Eddy's writings to look up everything I could find on color, eyes, light, and spiritual discernment. I found I was gaining in my understanding of Truth, but there was no evidence of healing.
