My family were ready and eager to help me
Although I attended a Christian Science Sunday School until the age of seventeen, I still did not feel that Science was effective for me, despite evidence I'd seen of its practicality in my family. During my childhood, when there was a need for healing or comfort, my father often quoted this verse from James (1:17): "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." Christian Science is indeed a precious gift from God, but I had to see this and prove it for myself.
After I entered college, I began to make my own decisions about things. One of these was to stop attending Christian Science Sunday School. But gradually, physical and other problems came into my life, until eventually I was treated for mental illness. Although this condition was presumed healed by the doctors, I did not feel that the medical treatment had accomplished its purpose.
The time came when I felt I had to "sink or swim" with Christian Science since medical care had proved valueless. I recalled the effectiveness of Science in my own family, including its preventive aspect. My father had not been sick in all the time I had observed him, nor had he missed a day from his office. If Christian Science could not heal me, I reasoned, nothing else could. In fact, deep within, even during the years I had turned from Science, a conviction had remained that, if applied correctly, this method could heal me.
