Can Christian Science heal hepatitis? Indeed it can! This...
Can Christian Science heal hepatitis? Indeed it can! This was proved to me some years ago when my husband and I were living in the middle of Africa. The American community was small but included seven doctors, two of whom appeared to be very opposed to Christian Science. Two other people were already down with hepatitis when I began to show symptoms of the disease. In asking a Christian Science practitioner in London to pray for me, I said I simply must be healed because, in a way, it seemed that Christian Science was on trial.
At this point, I looked up the allegory of the trial that concludes the chapter "Christian Science Practice" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. This allegory had never appealed to me, and I had always tended to skip over it in my reading. But this time I was impelled to turn to it. As I pondered it, following step by step the trial of Mortal Man in the Court of Error, I found that the various witnesses testifying against the defendant were the very ones that needed to be discredited in my case. The whole trial took on new meaning.
And then I saw that, just as the testimony of the witnesses in the Court of Error was proved null and void, when the trial was transferred to the Court of Spirit where Christian Science acted as counsel for the defendant, so the claims of disease attacking me could be nullified by my holding to the truth of man presented by Christian Science. The truth is that man is not subject to material laws but is subject only to the higher law of Spirit—man is made in the image of God! At the turning point of the trial, is this statement (p. 433): "Ah! but Christ, Truth, the spirit of Life and the friend of Mortal Man, can open wide those prison doors and set the captive free." As I studied this, I saw that as I turned away from the material picture and accepted the spiritual facts of being, the Christ, Truth, would surely enter and take over in my life. And indeed I had an almost overwhelming feeling of the Christ coming to my consciousness. "It was the living, palpitating presence of Christ, Truth, which healed the sick," as Mrs. Eddy explains (Science and Health, p. 351). For several weeks I stayed quietly in my room, letting the lovely healing presence of the Christ so fill my thoughts that I lost all sense of disease. I felt so very close to God. Soon a beautiful healing took place.
