I'm grateful that Christian Science is a total way of life, one that I can rely on in emergencies. One such emergency occurred a week before Christmas, 1976, when I was decorating the Christmas tree. I was attempting to join two strings of lights on the tree through a three-way attachment I was holding in my left hand. Foolishly I had left one string of lights plugged into the wall socket. As I joined the lights to the attachment, it blew up in a flame of fire, and I felt a charge of electricity. My husband and daughter came quickly to my aid. As I turned to God in prayer, I asked them to pray for me out loud to help me think clearly. My hand seemed very painful, but I refused to look at it.

Among the helpful and supporting statements that I used from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." My daughter shared with me the truth that only currents of Love could touch man's being. I responded at once, realizing that there are only currents of good. I knew Spirit to be the only substance of my true being. And I realized the truth of God's healing goodness clearly. Within five minutes the intense pain in my hand disappeared. I was overjoyed at this. Only after this turning point did we look at my hand. The palm side of my engagement and wedding rings had blown out, while the remaining sections had welded together. We relied on God alone for the healing of cuts at the base of three fingers. "Mind is the grand creator, and there can be no power except that which is derived from Mind" (Science and Health, p. 143).

My husband washed my hand gently with warm water. As I continued the prayerful metaphysical work, I could feel the torn skin drawing together and the healing process taking place. "Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; nor can the material senses bear reliable testimony on the subject of health" (ibid., p. 120).
