I must express gratitude, though belated, for protection and guidance during the Second World War. I was a student of architecture at a university when the first Army draft was enacted. During my stay at the university the Christian Science organization was an integral part of my educational activity. So it seemed very natural for me to pray and study in a Christian Science Reading Room. This helped me form correct concepts regarding guidance, protection, and so forth. I was quite fearful of being dismembered, gassed, or mortally wounded, and ending up a burden and source of sadness to others. War is an evil, but we can progressively prove that no such evil need continue in individual consciousness. Later I was to go without injury through two and one half years of war in the Mediterranean theater of operations.

After being assigned to a National Guard brigade headquarters company, I had the opportunity to apply for Officer Candidate School. My choice as to branch of service was Corps of Engineers, United States Army. This really seemed to me to be so right. But at that time they needed infantry officers badly and I wanted to be where I was most needed. I found myself being commissioned in the infantry. While this was at first a disappointment, I prayed and concluded that I would still be led, and God would place me. After one year I was detailed to the Corps of Engineers. This proved to be a good solution that came about through prayer.

Since my Army days, I have had class instruction and used this Science regularly. Serious adverse conditions have been negated, and continued good health is enjoyed.
