After many years of futile searching for release from weakness, pain, and fear, I first heard the words "Christian Science." This was a specific answer for my need of healing. It happened this way. I was under a doctor's care, waiting my turn in his office, when a young man whom I knew to be a Christian Scientist was there for one of his employees. He asked me, "Did you ever consider Christian Science?" I replied, "Oh, no, I could not give up medicine." But the thought of Christian Science was planted in my consciousness. In about a year and a half I was a member of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.

I eagerly turned to Christian Science for physical healing but soon learned that ignorance and fear had to be relinquished to make room for the unfolding of spiritual healing. Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health (p. 425): "Consciousness constructs abetter body when faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew." These statements have been very encouraging to me, and my appreciation for Mrs. Eddy's consecrated efforts in sharing with us her discovery of these sacred truths grows daily. Many physical and moral healings took place over the years, some so gradually that I was not aware of the change at the time: a very weak back, inability to walk average distances without extreme fatigue, criticism, anger, self-consciousness, extreme fear, and others.

Some healings were instantaneous. One that stands out most vividly was healing of a painful respiratory ailment that had hospitalized me several times in earlier years. This time as the result of Christian Science treatment, the problem was solved within a week. It was the severest struggle I have had. Toward the end of the week the physical evidences were the most frightening for me. After a phone conversation with the practitioner, during which I expressed my fears, I fell into a restful sleep. When I woke, I obeyed a strong urge to get out of bed, get dressed, take care of some urgent mail that had arrived, and walk to the post office nearby. When I returned to my apartment, the realization of what had happened stunningly dawned upon me. I was completely healed; I knew it and called the practitioner immediately to tell her so. We both expressed joy and gratitude for the presence of the healing Christ, revealing God's perfect man. The affirmations of God's omnipresence and love, which we had been faithfully sharing, opened the way for healing. The Bible verse that is displayed on the walls of many Christian Science churches has a deep significance for me (John 8:32): "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"—words of Christ Jesus. The healing took place on a Saturday, and the following Monday I was back at work, perfectly well and strong. This was some twenty years ago, and the healing has been permanent.
