I entered a restaurant on a chilly winter morning and ordered hot chocolate and a doughnut. The face behind the counter was familiar and usually cheerful.
"Hello, young man."
Young man? Young man! Doesn't she know my name yet? It seemed my name to everybody was young man, boy, son, kid— even skipper!
