As a young man I had a medicine chest of which any doctor could have been proud. I needed it, for I caught practically every ill that came along.

One day an overseer condemned some work that I had done under contract. I did not resent this. When he asked why, I said it was because I felt he was so sincere in his remarks. In telling me why, he explained some of the teachings of Christian Science and loaned me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Long before I had finished reading it I had destroyed all my medicines, and I had lost all desire for tobacco.

The first physical healing in our family through Christian Science was of our daughter, aged six months. She was healed of whooping cough. The doctor had said she could not live through the night. Although we did not understand much about Christian Science, my wife and I continued to read Science and Health, and in a few days the child was perfectly well. She is now a keen Christian Scientist, with children of her own.
