At the time I first learned of Christian Science, I was working...

At the time I first learned of Christian Science, I was working my way through college as a musician. I saw myself as a young man caught up in the moral turmoil of the Vietnam era, and I longed for a larger sense of God and to feel His presence. This I began to find through the teachings of Christian Science.

For several weeks I listened as a friend read to me from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. There were times when I argued theological points, but mostly I listened as the beauty and practicality of this book became more and more apparent. To learn of God as divine Principle and also as ever-present Love was an awakening that led to the resolution of the moral dilemmas I felt were confronting me on all sides.

One afternoon as I was setting up the equipment for our musical group in preparation for the engagement we had later in the evening, a large and heavy piece of sound equipment toppled over. The corner of this cabinet caught my foot, and the appearance of a crushed and broken toe was quite alarming and painful. I would have to be on my feet at least four hours, and at that particular moment the prospect of performing did not seem very hopeful.
