Like the student of mathematics, the student of the Science of Life has studying to do, concepts to grapple with and apply. The learning process is not the same, though. Divine Life, God, is actually conscious of the learner's true identity. Mathematics, of course, is not.

When the learner of Life is ready to advance, he finds that Life itself is already imparting the exact truths needed. And Life, God, bestows the intelligence with which to comprehend them. It's our responsibility to realize this and to bring our thoughts in line with Life. This mental clearing of the way means getting rid of selfishness, stubbornness, addiction to praise or drugs—or whatever would stand in the way of spiritual progress by fastening thought on the material, the mortal.

Happily, the misery caused by these obstacles or by disease may drive one to look higher. The Bible tells of a longtime sufferer, a woman with an issue of blood for twelve years. As Mark puts it, she "had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse."^{Mark 5:26;} But she turned to Christ Jesus, touched his robe, and was instantly healed.
