Don't Be a Weather Vane!
In Charles Dickens's Bleak House the character Mr. Jarndyce remarks, "I am always conscious of an uncomfortable sensation now and then when the wind is blowing in the east." "Rheumatism, sir?" said Richard. "I dare say it is, Rick. I believe it is." Bleak House, Chap. 6;
Men and women have too often allowed themselves to become slaves to the weather. They find themselves unconsciously affected by material atmosphere, whether in the form of wind, rain, heat, or cold. Thus climate becomes a kind of god to much of humanity. Weather is supposed to govern our health and moods and be at least a contributing factor in many kinds of disease.
How often people find themselves tending to gloom on wet days and cheerfulness on fine days! And we frequently hear the remark "Oh, he is under the weather." It has even been said that children are less teachable in dull weather than in fine.
