More than twenty-five years ago a perceptive friend invited me to a Christian Science lecture. At that period of my life I was sorely in need of direction. I had begun to doubt the religious concepts learned from childhood—even the existence of God or what I then understood God to be. For a number of years I had attended no church services at all. This disturbed me because I had a deep affection for the Bible teachings, although I admit they often seemed contradictory and puzzled me.

So I was pleasantly surprised upon attending my first lecture to find Christian Science was not at all what I had been told it was by persons critical of its teachings. Many of the thoughts expressed that evening seemed original and inspiring. Impressed though I was, I did not immediately nor completely accept this religion. Dogma, creed, and early instruction were too deeply ingrained. Instead it dawned on me like a gentle but unwavering light, which finally shone brightly in my thought as the true panacea for the world's ills.

I was working in a downtown area of a large city and found a Christian Science Reading Room close at hand. It became my noontime oasis, a respite from the fast-paced business of which I was then a part.
