When I was a child of six or seven years, my parents discovered I was not growing straight. I held one shoulder slightly higher than the other, and my skeletal framework was not properly aligned. My parents were Christian Scientists. Malformation had not hitherto been evident, and they were inclined to just dismiss this as a passing phase of shyness that I would sooner or later outgrow.
When it became apparent this was more serious, they decided something should be done. My father thought that shoulder braces worn for a time might help to correct the faulty posture. But my mother said no, that was not the Christian Science way, and we would ask a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. My father readily agreed. In her love for me my mother designed my clothes to help my appearance.
When I was eighteen, I enrolled in one of the city colleges. In the required physical examination for entrance, the examining physician told me I had a slight curvature of the spine.
