Two years ago I had an opportunity to live in Mexico
Two years ago I had an opportunity to live in Mexico. It was great and I loved it. I was far away from home, living with people who didn't speak English, and I was the only Christian Scientist in town. There were some challenges at first, but I had a very rewarding year.
Toward the end of October our school had a long weekend, so some friends and I went to a nearby island. Three of us were walking along the beautiful beach enjoying ourselves when I felt a sharp pain in my foot, rather like a bee-sting. We saw a scorpion on my foot. My friends were worried and said I should go to the doctor or the hospital immediately, because scorpion stings can be dangerous. I calmed myself and told them I would like to be healed in a different way, and would they please just help me home and to bed, which they did. I insisted that I did not want to spoil their fun; they finally left, but rather reluctantly. My foot had become swollen, but the pain had diminished.
I began to wonder how this could have happened to me. After all, there aren't supposed to be any accidents in God's kingdom, and earlier on the beach I had felt so close to God. Then I remembered that since my arrival I had heard about people being stung by scorpions and what happened to them, and I had wondered what it would be like to be stung by a scorpion. I began to think of how man really does live in harmony in God's kingdom with all His creation, and that one creature could not hurt another. Then I said a prayer I said when I was little (Poems by Mrs. Eddy, p. 69):
