Last Waking Thoughts
Regular, refreshing rest is evidently important to human beings. Most people seem to require peaceful sleep in order to maintain their physical and mental well-being. And even though "God never slumbers, and His likeness never dreams," Science and Health, p. 249; as Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, under God's rule of harmony we can expect to sleep regularly and well. The understanding of God's loving care for His children ensures that those who know themselves to be governed by His law have all they humanly need, until the belief of mortal existence dissolves before the understanding and demonstration of tireless divine Being, and the need for rest no longer exists.
Obedience to God's law is rewarded by many benefits—honor, long life, progress, and prosperity—even a good, restful sleep. Referring to the importance of keeping God's commandments, the writer of the book of Proverbs in the Bible says, "My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion." And he continues farther on, "When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet." Prov. 3:21, 24;
Divine Science points out that the quality of thought is the determining factor in our experience, whether waking or sleeping. Anyone who has kept a close watch on his consciousness during waking hours, admitting only thoughts that proceed from the one God, divine Mind, is far less likely to have problems with restlessness when asleep than one who has not. If he has allowed himself to act only in accord with divine Principle, and has kept his mentality free from the sins of killing, coveting, and stealing, and if he has been faithful to marriage vows and to his other human obligations, and has sincerely honored God, Spirit, in such a way as to maintain his reliance upon Spirit and his freedom from slavery to matter, he has a right to claim a peace of mind secure by day or night.
