Freedom from Sin

The human race has probably always been troubled by the problem of sin—how evil originated and why so many people are selfish, immoral, greedy, or cruel. No doubt humans have long wondered, too, why it is they often seem helpless to deal with the temptation to do evil.

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "The parent of all human discord was the Adam-dream, the deep sleep, in which originated the delusion that life and intelligence proceeded from and passed into matter." Science and Health, pp. 306—307; Sin has its root in the false belief that individuals are created material and unequal, combine inherited and environmental characteristics, and have built-in limitations, imperfections, frustrations.

However, the teachings of Christian Science refute the false belief of the Adam-dream by assuring us that the real man is spiritual and perfect, made in the image and likeness of God. How can man, the expression of omnipotent, omnipresent Love, be sinful or subject to temptation? He cannot be. Healing and regeneration, according to Christian Science, prove the truth of man's spiritual origin and the unreality of discord and evil.
