Christian Science came to my mother and me in 1916 in California when a family who were Christian Science students took refuge on our ranch from a windstorm. My appreciation of Christ Jesus' healings had begun in a rural nondenominational Sunday School, but my understanding of it began when I read the four propositions on page 113 of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "1. God is All-in-all.
2. God is good. Good is Mind.
3. God, Spirit, being all, nothing is matter.
4. Life, God, omnipotent good, deny death, evil, sin, disease.
—Disease, sin, evil, death, deny good, omnipotent God, Life."

During the First World War I was healed of a severe case of Spanish influenza by my obedience to the statement (ibid., p. 393): "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good." The effects of an automobile accident, a useless arm and bruises, were healed as I held to "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of the textbook, and insisted on manifesting joy. The wisdom of not enlarging upon error was shown in my quick recovery from the effects of a fall down a flight of concrete steps when I was six months pregnant. I turned my thought to God who had healed me before, and told no one but the Christian Science practitioner who treated me.

A complete healing of a knee that I had injured in school thirteen years before came through prayer in Christian Science. It would inconvenience me by going out of joint, and I was finally free of this when I realized that we must see only the spiritual man of God and cannot be offended. Before the day was ended new strength poured into my knee. Christian Science class instruction has been a blessing. Both of my daughters were quickly healed of chicken pox and measles. I have been very free of colds in recent years.
