A few years ago I awakened shortly after midnight with severe pain in the lower portion of my body. For some time I prayed, acknowledging God's allness and man's perfection as His likeness, but without relief. I finally felt I could not stand the discomfort much longer, and I silently cried out, "Dear God, why don't I get any relief? I've been relying on Truth."
On page 581 in the Glossary of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, is a definition of "angels" which reads in part, "God's thoughts passing to man." Immediately the following came to my thought (Isa. 26:3): "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." The word "stayed" seemed to be emphasized. Then I saw why I wasn't getting any relief. This Bible verse contains a rule for scientific demonstration and the reward for following that rule is peace. I was not following the rule, for one moment I was trusting in God to heal me, and the next moment I was dwelling on my suffering.
I became determined to be obedient to this glimpse of the truth. No matter how unpleasant the material picture, I refused to accept one false suggestion or entertain anything in my consciousness but pure ideas from God. Truths from inspiring Bible passages and from the textbook and the Christian Science Hymnal came to me. I did not just recite them mentally, but thoughtfully pondered the words and accepted them as the reality of man's being as God's child.
