The Effectiveness of Our Present Understanding
If we're newly interested in Christian Science, we might almost be discouraged when we read of the healings and demonstrations of those longer established in the study of this revelation—and we may think to ourselves, "It will take a long time before I reach those heights!" But because of the omnipotence of Truth, even a glimpse of Truth can begin now to bring healing. "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing," Science and Health, p. 449; Mrs. Eddy states.
The fact is that even a glimmer of spiritual understanding evidences the presence of all-understanding Mind. Scientifically viewed, understanding, as a quality of Mind, God, is never partial and therefore never inadequate. For this reason we can acknowledge in any troublesome situation—notwithstanding its apparent complexity, resistance, duration—that our present understanding of Truth is adequate to cope with it. If we judge that our spiritual understanding is too limited to help us, this indicates (from a scientific point of view) the limited conception of a personal sense of understanding, not the limitation of understanding itself.
Of course, we should always—in storm or calm—seek to extend our comprehension of God. But when we view our present understanding metaphysically, we can affirm confidently that it is enough to accomplish the removal of whatever is not good and replace it with what is good. Why? Because, in the last analysis, spiritual understanding is not personal but is the activity of divine Mind.
