Three summers ago I was employed aboard a yacht bound for Alaska. During the trip I was called upon to cook, clean, and navigate. The other three on board were all members of the same family, and at times I felt very much an outsider.
As we embarked on our ten-week voyage, one thing after another went wrong. We were delayed several times because of high winds and rough seas. Then our patience grew short, and we started quarreling.
I felt that since I was the only hired crew member, the others harassed me whenever they wanted to. I felt alone, with no one to turn to. Soon afterward I developed an obnoxious headache and a deep cut in my shinbone due to a fall, and became unusually fatigued at times when I had to be alert.
