A healing that occurred early in my study of Christian Science has served as a beacon to me. One of our children, not yet two years old, was weakened by severe diarrhea. He could not even lift his arms and move about normally but was motionless in his bed.

I had been inquiring about Christian Science and doing a little reading at that time, but I took him to a doctor. He said the child was dehydrated and prescribed some medicine. He told me that if he wasn't better by morning we would have to have him hospitalized and fed intravenously.

When I arrived home, I began to think of the things I'd been reading and learning of God in Christian Science. I realized how very much I wanted to believe that God heals. However, to rely upon God for healing was so strange to my thinking that a great mental struggle took place. I was afraid to put my little one in God's care. I gave him the medicine and continued my mental battle. I wanted to call a practitioner for treatment through prayer, but hesitated because I knew that Christian Science could not be mixed with material medicine. I had a choice to make. Four hours later when it was time for more medicine and our son was no better, I made my decision and called a Christian Science practitioner.
