Backpacking in the John Muir Wilderness
It was a magnificent day, the air was crisp, and I could see for fifty miles in any direction when the trail crested.
Since it was my second day out, by now I was quite deep into the John Muir Wilderness on a backpacking trip by myself. The beauty of the wilderness was breathtaking—rushing mountain streams, lakes, trees, and blue skies.
I had hiked fourteen miles this day when finally I approached a designated camping area with a stream flowing through the center. I would have fresh water for drinking and cooking. The sun had already set, casting huge shadows from the surrounding peaks.
