While I was attending college, total inability to grasp or retain...

While I was attending college, total inability to grasp or retain what I was reading led me to near suicide. On campus I ran into a friend and asked him why he was always so happy. He said he took his religion seriously. I swore at him and walked away.

The next day I committed myself to a psychiatric ward and withdrew from school. The friend, an active member in the Christian Science college organization, visited me and invited me to live with him and another organization member when I was released from the hospital. I accepted the invitation, and three months later I had an instantaneous healing of depression while reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, even though I understood almost nothing of what I read.

At this point I ceased having psychiatric care against the advice of the psychiatrist attending the case, who was convinced I had gotten worse. Through the study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings for four months, and treatment on two occasions by Christian Science practitioners, my concentration and retention so improved that during the next two and a half years at college I had a perfect grade average and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa (a society recognizing excellence in scholarship).
