At one time I had frequent attacks of pain in my stomach

At one time I had frequent attacks of pain in my stomach. Eventually I was confined to bed for several days, afraid to move. A concerned member of my family who was not a Christian Scientist suggested that I see a doctor, and I consented. The doctor took a test and told me the ailment was appendicitis and I should have an immediate operation. Then he called an ambulance to take me to the hospital.

While he was doing this, I was thinking that I had committed myself to Christian Science, being a lifelong student and a devoted church member. Now, I asked myself if I really trusted God to heal me. At this point it was my branch church membership that sustained me. I was active in my church and studying and using Science in my daily life. I fearlessly rejected all the doctor's arrangements and asked to be taken to a Christian Science practitioner. I was still in pain at this time, so I returned home and the practitioner came and sat by my bed and prayed. I fell asleep for a few moments, then awakened free of pain. The next day I was up and about my usual duties. This was fifteen years ago, and I have had no return of this illness.

This healing has shown me the need for total commitment to God. The hidden suggestion in my thought that medicine, surgery, or a doctor could be a last resort meant that I did not understand the importance of Jesus' command: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind" (Matt. 22:37). I had been holding out hope for a savior other than spiritual Truth, but when I took my stand for Truth, I was healed.
