AT CHRISTMAS TIME

Maybe oxen breathed warmly
nearby, watching,
hearing the new cry
as Mary tended
her firstborn son,
as Joseph protected
the infant one.

Note those benign,
content to serve,
those present by design
when the Christ-idea emerges
from the night,
observing
the homage of wise men
led by light.
