The issue of the Sentinel on the creative...

The issue of the Sentinel on the creative arts was a source of inspiration to me. I especially liked the idea of the coincidence of art and science, because it related so well to the art–science of photography. It reminded me that all our activity is just a means of expressing spirituality and that we shouldn't get too hung up on the material tools of our expression.

I had an interesting experience recently concerning light. I had desperately tried to come to terms with creativity the day before by trying to project my deepest thoughts while taking pictures. The experiment seemed a flop. I tried the same thing on another day to no avail. So I decided to try reading the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly for inspiration. The subject was "Truth," and it was really inspiring. It became clear that Truth is universal and something all men share in equally.

My whole approach to art had been mortal self–expression (small personal ego as opposed to the one Ego, or Mind, God), not one of sharing universal truths. Now, as I looked around my room at the photographs on the wall, they appeared more beautiful than ever before. Everything looked better! Reading the lesson had colored my whole outlook. I was looking at things that had seemed drab and colorless before but now had a whole new dimension. The beauty was not inherent in the material things themselves; it was the spiritualized vision with which I now saw them. And I thought to myself, "Everyone can share this good feeling, can share this good feeling, can have their outlook colored with this spiritual perception."
