What Do You Want?
Why does the fulfillment of worthwhile desires sometimes seem hit-or-miss?
The Bible provides an answer: "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." James 4:3; The New English Bible translates this verse: "Your requests are not granted because you pray from wrong motives, to spend what you get on your pleasures."
Mrs. Eddy has devoted the whole first chapter of Science and Health to the subject of prayer. In this chapter she instructs us how to pray effectively and how to examine our motives for prayer and purify them. This chapter clearly explains how God's law applies to desire and fulfillment.
