The Will and the Way
"Thy will be done." Matt.6:10; Perhaps these words in the Lord's Prayer evoke in many people a feeling of resistance, because each would like to shape his existence according to his own will.
A characteristic of self-will is to attempt to impose one's own will upon others. Only the true understanding of God and His will imparts the joyous desire to do His will and inspires the prayer that all may know the blessings such obedience brings.
Those who imagine God to be a threatening Jehovah, a supernatural being who indiscriminately destroys or preserves His creation, rewards or punishes His children, will not pray with trust and joy for His will to be done. Thinking of God in such a way indicates ignorance of His nature and a limited sense of good.
