Just what does it mean to be at one with God? One may ask oneself, "Can I possibly be even near God, let alone at one with Him? Can I be spiritually-minded enough for such an experience?"
Thousands of years ago men perceived something of man's unity with God, a perception so genuine that it had a practical effect on their lives. The experience of Jacob, as narrated in the Bible, indicates how this unity was revealed to him through prayer, and how he was protected.
Jacob was returning to his own country from which he had fled after dealing dishonestly with his people there. On the way back, with his own young family, he learned that his brother Esau was coming with four hundred men to meet him with revengeful intent. Jacob prayed all night. In the morning his meeting with Esau was no vindictive fight but a warm, brotherly meeting, and Jacob told Esau, "I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me." Gen. 33:10;
