When I had just become interested in Christian Science, our...

When I had just become interested in Christian Science, our three-year-old son suffered from severe ear and throat infections. Since neither my husband nor I felt our understanding of the healing power of this religion sufficient to heal this condition through prayer alone, we turned to a medical doctor for help. The answer was that an operation was necessary.

Our family had had a number of healings through Christian Science treatment with the help of a practitioner, but now I felt discouraged. I phoned to tell the practitioner that Christian Science was too difficult for me and I guessed I would have to give it up and follow through with the doctor's plan. Her loving response was, "Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth" (Rom. 14:22). She agreed to help me through this experience, and because of this support I was able to see the little one recover hours before others who had had the same operation.

During the year I had begun to attend Wednesday evening testimony meetings regularly and to study the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly every day. Our three children were also regularly attending Christian Science Sunday School. At this time it became apparent that our older daughter, then six years old, was not hearing properly. Again we turned to this same medical specialist. The diagnosis was infection, ruptured eardrums, and a severe loss of hearing. As the doctor wrote out a prescription for medication, I heard myself saying, "I am a Christian Scientist, and in fairness to you I want you to know I do not intend to follow through with this medication but want to turn to Christian Science treatment for healing." This was the first time that I had identified myself as a Christian Scientist. The doctor said that he would be very interested to see what could be accomplished through Christian Science treatment. He asked me to return with my daughter in one month, the length of time the prescribed medication would have been taken. I promised to return.
