In Miscellaneous Writings Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 367), "Matter and evil are subjective states of error or mortal mind." The truth of this statement was indelibly impressed upon me about twenty years ago.

At that time I noticed a growth developing on my body, which I dismissed with more zeal than understanding, since at that time I was much preoccupied with renovating a home and with family duties. However, it was evident that I was entertaining a latent fear, because suddenly I became aware of the wide publicity given a certain disease which was said to manifest similar symptoms. Soon after, the growth enlarged, and pain intruded. I found I was becoming very fearful and frantically trying to avoid hearing any announcements mentioning this condition, as if hiding from it would in itself dispel fear. But this was of no avail.

In this extremity I turned completely to the truths of Christian Science for healing and earnestly endeavored to apply them. I realized I could not meet this fear successfully without handling every phase of such a lie as forcibly as Mrs. Eddy elucidated when she wrote of Christ Jesus (ibid., pp. 24, 25), "The Nazarene Prophet declared that his followers should handle serpents; that is, put down all subtle falsities or illusions, and thus destroy any supposed effect arising from false claims exercising their supposed power on the mind and body of man, against his holiness and health."
