"You know better than that!"

On a drenched Saturday afternoon few people were venturing to the downtown shopping area. The subway station was quiet as a woman stepped off the car to go on an errand.

When she passed through the tall turnstile at the end of the platform, she was confronted with a group of seven youths surrounding an elderly woman. Two of the youths were blocking the path so that the older woman couldn't go forward through the turnstiles into the station. Another two, standing on either side, were searching her pockets. The remaining three stood behind to prevent her turning and escaping in that direction.

"Hey! Hey! Hey! Stop that!" shouted the woman who had come across the scene. This student of Christian Science acted fearlessly and without hesitation, although there was nobody else around to hear her and assist in preventing the crime. It was as though she were taking part in a well-rehearsed play and knew just what to do.
