In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy...

In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter, —and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well." And that was my first experience in Christian Science. It happened this way.

For about six months I had suffered from what was diagnosed as a heart condition, and from the fear of death. I had read and reread the four Gospels, trying to find some clue to Jesus' healings, but had failed. Then a sister-in-law, who was a student of Christian Science, made a special effort to come some distance to see me. She told me I could be cured in Christian Science, which heals the way Jesus healed. She told me something about it, and I liked to hear her talk but did not understand it.

Since there was not a Christian Science practitioner in the town, she went to see the First Reader of the branch Church of Christ, Scientist. He said he would come to see me if I wanted him to, but I would not have it. When my sister-in-law returned home, she sent me a subscription to the Sentinel for three months. Then one Sunday the First Reader and his wife stopped at the door on their way home from church and left a copy of Science and Health, The Christian Science Journal, and the biography of Mrs. Eddy by Sibyl Wilbur. I read some of the literature and felt better while reading, even though I did not understand it. The word "truth" came up so often, and in absolute frustration I thought like Pilate, "What is truth?" (John 18:38.) I gave up the struggle and went back to despair.
