The Dove and the Sword

The understanding of divine Science brings heaven to humanity. Science reveals that God, infinite Love, governs all, and His reign of harmony is eternally established. It maintains that His universe is in truth spiritual, and God's man, made in the divine image, is upright, loving, loved, whole, free. So powerful an influence for good in human affairs is this understanding of divine Truth that one moment of awareness of it can heal acute disease and bring great peace to a suffering heart.

But even while healing mankind's wounds, the demands of Science upon the human mind are trenchant. Nothing "that defileth ... or maketh a lie"^{Rev. 21:27;} can exist in the kingdom of heaven, divine consciousness. So, before the deep, permanent, spiritual comfort, health, and settled harmony of heaven can be fully realized as present with us, the sword of Truth must eliminate from thought all the errors of sin and material sense. Every corner of the human mind must be purged of false belief in a power and presence apart from God, divine Love.

When Jesus, the sinless Son of God, was baptized, the Gospel tells us "the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him."^{Matt. 3:16;} This vision of divine Science endowed the Master with such spiritual power that after forty days in the wilderness he embarked upon the most remarkable career that the world has known. He healed and taught thousands. He destroyed sin and disease and roused uninspired, depressed, limited human thought to recognize the presence of the infinite goodness, purity, and harmony of real being as it is created by God, divine Spirit.
