I had the joyous privilege of having a testimony published in a March, 1947, Sentinel. Since then I have had many healings through wholly relying on Christian Science, for which I am indeed grateful. Over the past years of traveling many thousands of miles on cross-country vacation trips by automobile, we have had several outstanding proofs of God's protecting care. Before and during the trips I would always go over some hymns from our Christian Science Hymnal, verses from the Bible, or statements I had memorized from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Occasionally I asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray for us when we started on a long trip, and as a consequence we always experienced complete harmony and protection.
On one occasion a cow suddenly ran out on the highway when we were going at maximum speed. All of us in the car immediately made a silent declaration of Truth, as it happened too quickly to state the words aloud. It was as though a power greater than the force of gravity and more potent than mechanical brakes checked the speed of the car, which was on a steep downgrade, and we could feel the car losing speed faster than seemed physically possible. We missed the cow by a hair's breath.
On another occasion, while driving around a curve on a winding mountain road, the car skidded on some loose gravel and began slipping over the edge of a steep precipice. Again there was no time for a verbal affirmation of Truth, but our thoughts were already with God. The car sort of sidled into a lone tree, which held it. For many feet on either side of this tree, there was nothing that could have stopped our downward plunge. There was no injury to the occupants of the car, no damage to the tree, and only a slight dent in the top of the car, which was almost on its side. Within a few minutes a forest ranger came along and secured a towing truck to get us back on the highway. Within an hour we were on our way again, with this beautiful instance of God's protection as a further staff upon which to lean.
