"[The Lord] brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God" (Ps. 40:2, 3). One day while studying the Bible, as I read the above verse from Psalms, I suddenly thought, "Oh, how true this is of my life!"

When I was a young girl, it seemed as if I were in a horrible pit, mired down in the belief that man is a material entity, subject to sickness, sin, and death. I was in constant pain, completely helpless, unable to stand, unable to sit up without help. I lacked the strength and ability even to feed myself, and anyway I was seldom able to eat more than toast and milk once or twice a day. As I lay on the couch, I often thought, "It would be a shame for me to die of malnutrition while living in a house well-stocked with food."

Throughout this experience, which lasted several months, I was diligently studying Christian Science and having prayerful treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. Eventually it became clear to me that man, God's spiritual idea, is not dependent on food for well-being, for man is sustained by God alone. No longer was I frightened by the thought of malnutrition, and soon I was able to eat and to feed myself. After a year of incapacity I was able to enter college, even though I was in a wheelchair and some were dubious that someone so frail should undertake the rigors of university life. However, I was able to go forth confidently, knowing I was sustained by God.
