My earliest recollection of healing in Christian Science is of streptococcic throat when I was eight years old. My mother was praying for me, but my father, who was not a Christian Scientist, had become so alarmed at my condition that he insisted a doctor be called. In spite of the doctor's conscientious ministrations, my condition continued to worsen.

My mother, who according to instructions had taken my temperature, found it was about 105 degrees. She became so fearful for me that in deep distress she called a Christian Science practitioner. As Mother realized, the practitioner said she could not treat me while I was under medical care but that she would pray for Mother to help her overcome fear. This is in accord with Mrs. Eddy's words in Science and Health (p. 412): "If the case is that of a young child or an infant, it needs to be met mainly through the parent's thought, silently or audibly on the aforesaid basis of Christian Science." Within thirty minutes of the call my temperature was normal and I was resting comfortably.

The doctor, who returned the next day, confirmed the healing but could not understand it. I was up and about in a day or two. After this I began to study Christian Science myself, and although I had always attended Sunday School, it now became a deep joy to me.
