The Christian Scientist's First Tenet

Every event in the history of mortal man is a metaphor. Like a brushstroke on the canvas of cumulative thought, each incident, when understood, tells more than the incident itself. In fact, when we discern the meaning of what has happened, the meaning rather than the event becomes the dominant fact.

For example, the Bible tells of the creation of Adam out of the dust of the ground. Many take this account literally; Christian Scientists do not. But whether or not it happened as recorded, the story, with the subsequent creation of Eve and then with the fall as a result of the serpent's temptation in the Garden of Eden, can serve as a basis for understanding many of today's difficult problems. The temptations we face today are vividly inferred by the serpent's "Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Gen. 3:5;

The inspired Word of the Bible is much more than mere history. It is divinely enlightened expression of the truths of God and man as they apply to humanity, presented in terms comprehensible to inspired human consciousness.
