In 1942, during an air raid, I fell down the cellar steps and severely injured my back, so much so that my husband, who had been a serving officer of an ambulance brigade, said either my back or my pelvis was broken. He never asked me what I wanted but immediately phoned for a Christian Science practitioner, who commenced treatment straightaway. After a fortnight's treatment, when she came to visit me and saw me still lying on boards, she put out her hand and asked whether I wished to rise. After a moment's hesitation (during which I was silently praying for God's help and guidance) I put out my hand, and was able to get up.
For about two to three weeks I used two sticks, but after that time I was able to discard them. I was healed. Since that time I have walked perfectly and have never suffered in any way. At the time of my fall my mother was living with us. She was bitterly opposed to Christian Science, but after I was healed, her whole attitude changed toward our religion, and she started to attend the services. She began to read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly at the same time, reaping many benefits from it. This proved to me what Mary Baker Eddy has written in the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 574): "'The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares." I would also like to add that I was expecting a child at the time of this injury and healing. A daughter was born perfectly naturally five months afterward, with only Christian Science treatment.
The blessings we have had in our home are legion. Perhaps the greatest being the healing of false traits of character.
