Although I was very active physically, and was a member of The Mother Church and had been studying Christian Science for some time, I suddenly found myself in great pain and my leg in a state of immobility.
Great concern was expressed by members of my family, who do not understand the method of Christian Science healing, and I submitted to X rays. This showed that I was suffering from a degenerative condition of the bone. The verdict of two doctors was that I would be a cripple within six months if I did not have an operation. I felt stunned.
It seemed to me that Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy had not kept me from this disaster, and I decided I would no longer read it. Turning to oil painting, I lost myself in it, resigned to sitting and bed rest, never leaving the house, as the least bit of walking caused much pain. Turning still to the Bible, I found many subjects for painting, and was content.
