Nine years ago my husband and I were very active members of another church, and our four children attended Sunday School regularly. For several years I was a member of a church prayer group, but gradually lost interest because prayer to God as we were practicing it did not seem to bring practical results. Yet a deep conviction remained that a loving God answers prayer if one has the key of understanding.

During this period our youngest son fell and broke his right arm while on a family picnic. Although we had been parents for over twenty years then, this was the first broken bone in the family. As we rushed the child to the hospital to have the bone set, I remember thinking wistfully, "Prayer could heal this, if only I had the key."

A deep spiritual longing began to grow within me, as did the conviction that my church could not meet these spiritual needs. I was acquainted with other religions, including Christian Science, but misunderstood its teachings, and due to a false picture of Mrs. Eddy, was very hostile to its Founder. At this point there seemed no religious home for me, and yet I could not remain true to myself and stay where I was. So I resigned from a youth leadership position and quit the church, although my husband and children remained active.
