Freedom and Church

Life in the mountains—heavenly! Beautiful, rugged country to explore, peace and quiet, much freedom—but no church to attend! Having recently discovered the riches of attending a Church of Christ, Scientist, my husband and I found ourselves in our new home with no church to go to. We began to hold services for ourselves each Sunday and Wednesday.

Gradually the news got out that there were Christian Science services "up on the hill," and others began to attend. We soon found we had to be at our posts as Readers every week without fail. Now, we loved the services, but being at a certain place at a certain time twice a week was something we just were not used to. We had lived a very free and easy life, living outdoors, backpacking, hiking, never staying in one place too long.

But as we became more involved with holding services, we began to see changes in our lives. A job was found when none seemed available, some unhealthy habits were dropped, and order and harmony began to replace discord and confusion. "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle" Science and Health, p. 583; (part of the definition of "Church" in Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy) was becoming the structure of our lives, and obedience to God was having results.
