All my life I had known of Christian Science, for we had friends who attended the local Church of Christ, Scientist. In 1932, I went to a Christian Science lecture, but I cannot remember any details about it. Twenty years later, when I had crossed the world to Australia, a friend began writing me to try Christian Science. I had suffered with bronchitis for many years, and at this time also had asthma. Following her recommendations I went to a few Christian Science services, but was not very receptive.
Then came the time in 1955 when I began to be interested in New Zealand, and in 1956 came here to work. Walking down the main street one day I noticed a sign saying that Christian Science services were held here. Some months later I was transferred in my work to a hill suburb. Even in this climate I still suffered with bronchitis and asthma. One day it was suggested to me that I visit a certain doctor in the city. This I did. After I came out and was walking along the street, I realized that I had no confidence in the doctor and if I went on in the same way I would not be able to work in a few years' time. It was then that I really decided to try Christian Science. I went to the next Wednesday meeting and borrowed a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I read the book through and realized that I could not have Science and medicine, so I took all my pills and potions and threw them away, being determined to give Science a good trial, having tried everything else, all to no avail. From that time I never looked back. In three months I was free of the asthma and bronchitis.
About four years ago, when I was serving as Second Reader, the bronchitis began to return. With the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner I saw that "God requireth that which is past" (Eccl. 3:15), and that was the end of that problem.
